Beginner's Journey: How Your Parents Can Learn to Play Portal

Etra's Games for Nongamers is a website on itch.io that offers tutorials and information to help new gamers be more successful. After watching me awkwardly navigate moving in Railroader, my daughter suggested I try this tutorial. The creator of the website compares learning video game conventions to learning to read. The problem is, unlike reading, there aren't any beginner phonics games to practice.

On the website you can get tutorials on first-person-shooter game mechanics. There's also one for Minecraft.

The directions for this tutorial recommend labeling WASD with Forward, Left, Back and Right stickers. E gets a sticker called Interact and the spacebar is labeled jump and shift is labeled run. The left mouse button is labeled Fire.

The player works through a short game that gives them practice with moving, camera control and firing.

I would like to point out that I have no trouble moving around in Minecraft and part of the problem with Railroader has to do with the camera.

Nevertheless, playing this tutorial helped me get better with PC game controls.

Check it out!
